Glaucoma, a timely check-up can make all the difference

Glaucoma is an eye disease that damages the optic nerve and may cause irreversible vision loss. Glaucoma is known as the ‘silent thief of sight’ because it does not present symptoms in its early stages.

 

 

Types of glaucoma

• Primary open-angle glaucoma
• Angle-closure glaucoma
• Secondary glaucoma
• Congenital Glaucoma

Risk factors

• Age over 40
•  Family history of glaucoma
• High eye pressure
• Myopia
•  Diabetes, hypertension o migraines
• Ethnical group
• Prolonged use of corticosteroids

Symptoms

Glaucoma does not usually present warning signs or evident symptoms during the early stages. As the disease progresses, the following symptoms appear:

 

• Progressive loss of the visual field
• Blurred vision
• Eye pain, redness, nausea, vomiting (angle-closure glaucoma attack )

How to prevent it?

• Regular eye tests, especially from the age of 40
• Control of eye pressure

 

Available treatments

• Eye drops to reduce eye pressure
• Laser and surgery in advanced cases
