Food allergies occur when our body reacts adversely to the ingestion of, or contact with, certain foods.
Although this type of allergy can occur at any age, they are often quite common in children (especially in children under the age of 5).
Patients can often remain asymptomatic for an extended period of time, provided they avoid eating the food responsible. In severe cases, life-threatening reactions may occur even with a trace or very small amounts of the food in question.
The most common symptoms of food allergies are:
Cutaneous: itching of the mouth, palate and/or throat, skin rashes, swelling of the tongue, lips and/or eyelids….
Gastrointestinal: diarrhoea, vomiting, colicky abdominal pain…
Respiratory: sneezing, nasal congestion, shortness of breath, tightness in the throat.
Anaphylaxis in the most severe cases, a life-threatening allergic reaction can occur involving several systems of the body, requiring the urgent and immediate administration of drugs.
Eosinophilic oesophagitis: this is inflammation of the walls of the oesophagus as a result of the long-term intake of one or several foods, causing progressive narrowing that can lead to episodes of choking and impaction of solid food before reaching the stomach.
Foods most frequently involved in allergic reactions include cow’s milk protein, eggs, fruits, nuts, fish, and seafood.
Skin prick test and prick-prick test: with the different foods involved in the reaction.
Molecular diagnosis: using the extraction of a small blood sample.
Challenge test: in those cases of a possible mild reaction or in cases where the specialist suspects that the patient is ready to tolerate the food in question.
Oral tolerance Induction:in children over the age of 5 with persistent allergy to cow’s milk and/or egg protein.
There are two strategies:
The best possible therapeutic options, personalised treatment.
Latest technology in diagnostic and treatment.
Excellent personal care.
