Skin allergies occur when an allergen comes into contact with the skin causing a rash, urticaria and/or angioedema, redness, pruritus, itching, or burning.
A skin manifestation of an allergy may also occur when the allergen is encountered through a route other than the skin.
Symptoms of skin allergies can present in the form of hives, swelling, a burning sensation, pruritus, or itching.
Although very annoying, they are usually mild, however, they can sometimes be aggravated causing difficulty breathing or discomfort in the throat.
There are multiple allergens causing this type of allergy, the most frequent being: metals, adhesives, acrylates, cosmetics…
There are further allergens which produce skin symptoms without direct contact, reactions may occur after eating certain foods or taking certain drugs.
Patch tests (epicutaneous tests): these involve the application of a series of different substances to the skin, they are then covered for 48 hours to see if a reaction occurs
Skin prick test: in skin reactions when the suspected cause is a certain food or medicine.
Intradermal skin test: for skin reactions caused by some drugs
Once the problem has been identified, there are different ways to deal with symptom control, in both the short and long term.
The different treatment options include: antihistamines, nasal corticosteroids, eye drops, several types of inhalers, biologic drugs and immunotherapy (vaccine) against the allergens responsible.
The best possible therapeutic options, personalised treatment.
