Uveitis

uveítis

Uveitis is an inflammation affecting the uvea, the middle layer of the eye, which includes the iris, ciliary body and choroid. This condition can involve other parts of the eye, such as the retina or optic nerve, and is classified according to location, duration and cause. Although uveitis can occur at any age, it is most common in young and middle-aged adults.

If not treated in time, uveitis can cause serious complications such as glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachment or even irreversible vision loss.

At HC Marbella we offer a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of uveitis. Our team of ophthalmologists, supported by specialists in internal medicine and rheumatology, work together to address both the symptoms and underlying causes of this condition, ensuring comprehensive and personalised care for each patient.

Symptoms can appear suddenly and vary depending on the type of uveitis. The most common are:

  • Eye pain.
  • Eye redness.
  • Sensitivity to light (photophobia).
  • Blurred or decreased vision.
  • Appearance of eye floaters in the visual field (myodesopsia).

factores de riesgo oculares

The causes of uveitis are varied and may include::

  • Autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus or ankylosing spondylitis.
  • Viral, bacterial, fungal or parasitic infections, such as toxoplasmosis, tuberculosis or herpes.
  • Previous eye trauma or surgery.
  • Idiopathic, when no specific cause is identified.

pastillas

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and the severity of the inflammation:

  • Corticosteroids administered in the form of drops, injections or oral medications to control the inflammation.
  • Immunosuppressants, in the case of autoimmune diseases.
  • Antibiotics or antivirals, if the cause is infectious.
  • Surgical interventions to resolve complications, or to take samples for analysis.

Early treatment is essential to prevent complications and protect vision.
