Sudden loss of strength or altered sensation, dizziness and loss of balance or coordination can be symptoms of a Transient Ischaemic Attack, they can be both a warning sign and an opportunity for early treatment
Transient ischaemic attack (TIA) is a subtype of stroke, it causes similar symptoms, but usually only lasts a few minutes without leaving any permanent damage.
TIA is frequently a warning sign. Between 1 and 3 people who have a transient ischaemic attack will have a stroke (cerebrovascular accident) at some point, half within the following year.
A TIA can be a warning sign as well as an opportunity – a warning that a cerebrovascular accident is imminent, and an opportunity to take measures to prevent it.
- Weakness, numbness or paralysis of the face, arm or leg, generally on one side of the body.
- Difficulty speaking or understanding others.
- Blindness in one or both eyes, double vision.
- Dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.
- A sudden, severe headache with no apparent cause.
- It is possible you will have more than one TIA, recurrent signs and symptoms can be similar or different depending on the area of the brain involved.
Given that TIAs occur more frequently hours or days before a stroke, it is essential to seek medical care immediately after an assumed TIA. Seek medical attention immediately if you suspect that you have had a transient ischaemic attack. Rapid assessment and identification of the potentially treatable effects can help you to prevent a stroke.
