The Pulmonology Unit offers the possibility of sampling pulmonary or pleura tissue for the diagnosis of diseases such as cancer or severe infections.
These tissues are subsequently analysed and treated in the laboratory.
There are a number of procedures for carrying out a biopsy, whether performed using transbronchial or thoracoscopic needle aspiration or open biopsy.
This is the follow-up test that is carried out in order to assess an abnormality observed in a CT scan or chest X-ray.
A pulmonary biopsy can be performed on an outpatient basis or as part of your stay in the hospital. It is carried out under local anaesthetic to numb the area.
Depending on the disease to be examined a decision will be taken regarding which medical instrument to use, for example puncture using a fine needle.
