Varicose veins in the legs

problemas circulatorios

They are dilated superficial leg veins.

Varicose veins are caused by venous insufficiency, the inability of leg veins to perform their function of returning blood to the heart, due to malfunctioning venous valves. As a result of this, the blood drops to the lower section of the vein, leading to an accumulation of blood inside the leg, forcing the veins to dilate, making them visible and/or palpable.

  • Sex: women are more likely to develop varicose veins.
  • Age: as we age, we are more likely to suffer from them.
  • Pregnancy: due to hormonal changes, weight gain…
  • Obesity
  • History of deep vein thrombosis (DVT and blood clots)
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Standing for much of the time when working.
  • Heavy, tired legs
  • Discomfort, cramp, stabbing pain, swelling, burning, or throbbing
  • Appearance of purplish colouring on the surface of the skin
  • Twisted and bulging veins
  • Restless leg syndrome

VenaSeal of the saphenous trunks

  • The application of a biological glue (cyanocrylate) allows the affected vein to be closed.
  • Sealing saphenous trunks with biological glue is a very effective and minimally invasive procedure.
  • It leaves no scars, no bruises and no marks.
  • Normal life can be resumed immediately.

Sclerotherapy

  • Foamed chemical sclerosis is a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment for varicose veins and can be performed during consultation. It involves the injection of a solution directly into the vein causing the vessel to shrink and eventually disappear.
  • The number of sessions required will depend on the extent, stage, and type of varicose vein.
  • As this is a very simple treatment which does not require an operating theatre, patients can return to their normal daily life immediately.
  • This procedure requires the avoidance of sun exposure.

Endovenous thermal ablation

  • VNUS ClosureFast radiofrequency of the saphenous vein
    • A procedure that uses radiofrequency to contract the walls of the vein leading to occlusion of the varicose vein.
    • It enables only the affected veins to be treated and reduces the formation of new vessels.
    • There is no scarring and symptoms rapidly improve.

  • Endovenous laser of the saphenous vein
    • A procedure which uses laser to seal the walls of the veins through heat emission.
    • Minimally invasive outpatient surgery
    • Daily routine can be resumed very quickly.
    • Compression stockings are usually required for a few days after the procedure.
