Cranial CT scan

A cranial CT scan is used to create images of the head, including the skull, brain, eye sockets, and sinuses.

 

Certain examinations require a contrast medium with iodine that is introduced through a vein in the arm before beginning the examination.

The cranial CT is used to help diagnose or monitor the following conditions:

▪ Congenital anomalies of the head or neck

▪ Brain infection

▪ Brain tumour

▪ Accumulation of fluid in the skull

▪ Injury (trauma) to the head and face

▪ Stroke or bleeding in the brain

 

The basic cranial CT studies are:

▪ Study of the petrous part of the temporal bone

▪ Study of the eye sockets

▪ Cervicofacial studies

▪ Study of the paranasal sinuses

Study of the spine and marrow

▪ Trauma

▪ Study of the base of the skull

▪ Brain death
