Eating disorders (EDs) are serious illnesses with consequences for the physical and psychological health of sufferers and their families.
EDs involve altered eating habits or weight control behaviours that disrupt the physical, psychological and social functioning of an individual.
The consequences for sufferers can be devastating. In addition, they may experience drastic personality changes, apathy, fatigue, social isolation and extreme preoccupation with food, weight and appearance.
Medical complications include tooth decay, reduced hormone levels and loss of bone density, as well as more serious medical complications such as heart problems and, in extreme circumstances, even death.
Types of eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia, binge eating disorders and atypical eating disorders.
Disordered eating habits can manifest in the form of restricted food intake, rules, strict dieting, preoccupation with food, and altered eating behaviours.
Disordered weight control behaviour may include excessive exercise, self-induced vomiting, and misuse of laxatives, enemas or diuretics.
