One in six people in Spain will suffer an ictus throughout his life, but despite the high frequency of this episode many people do not even know what it is and what causes it. A stroke is a number of conditions that affect the blood vessels that supply blood to the brain. A stroke is like a heart attack, but in the brain.
In general and most cases, risk factors are a result from high blood pressure followed by heart diseases, personal particularities, advanced age, lifestyle, etc.., although in some cases they are genetic and these can’t be modified. The following risk factors can indeed be controlled by us: tobacco, weight (overweight), cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes.
It is very important to identify the symptoms of a stroke in order to prevent it, although in some cases the symptoms are not easy to recognize. It is vital to be alert if we suffer from one of the following risk factors:
– total or partial loss of the vision in one or both eyes
– intense and sudden headache
– difficulty to gesticulate, strength loss in limbs
– trouble with speaking
– decrease in sensitivity, it can start with a tingle
In case of noticing any of the following symptoms, it is imperative that you immediately call your doctor and go to a hospital, as it is necessary to receive treatment no later than 6 hours after the first symptoms.
– exercise moderately
– avoid stress
– follow the Mediterranean diet: balanced diet, poor in saturated fats and rich in antioxidants
– control blood pressure and cholesterol levels
– moderate alcohol intake
– stop smoking
– brain training
