Sometimes with health problems it’s difficult to know who is the appropriate specialist to see. In the case of men’s health, the specialist is usually a Urologist, a doctor who specialises in treating conditions of the male reproductive system as well as diseases of the urinary tract in both men and women.
But when men go the doctor with a health problem connected with the genital area, or sexual function, it is important that the Urologist also has specialist knowledge of Andrology.
Andrology encompasses the care of male sexual health and reproduction and focuses on the investigation of conditions related to male sexuality and reproduction. An Andrologist is also a Urologist, but is even more specialised, investigating the causes of infertility and erectile dysfunction as well as other issues.
The main problems treated by a Urologist-Andrologist include:
• Infertility studies.
• Ejaculation disorders.
• Erectile dysfunction (impotence).
• Vasectomy.
• Morphological abnormalities of the penis.
• Hormone changes in men.
• Problems with sexual identity.
• Male sexually transmitted diseases.
Many different conditions can develop in the male reproductive system, including those previously mentioned, unfortunately there are still many misconceptions surrounding these problems.
Dr. Fernández Montero, Urologist and Andrology Specialist at HC Marbella stresses the importance of seeing a specialist and of ignoring non-medical forums and old wives’ tales regarding these conditions, he also stresses the importance of an accurate diagnosis to enable correct treatment of any problem related to male sexual function:
• “In our department we are able to provide the necessary diagnostic techniques including: Doppler ultrasound of the testicles, used, amongst other things, to assess the possible existence of a varicocoele or dilatation of the testicular veins (a frequent cause of fertility problems in men); seminogram or semen analysis, which shows the number and characteristics of sperm in the ejaculate; general blood analysis and evaluation of male sex hormones; genetic studies, and testicular puncture or biopsy.
• “In addition, we have a variety of options for the treatment of male impotence, these include oral medication, penile injection to induce an erection as well as vacuum devices and surgical implantation of penile prosthesis, the treatment prescribed being different for each individual patient”.
• In the case of vasectomy, “As long as vasectomy was performed less than 6-8 years ago, reversal surgery can be considered using vasovasotomy. At HC Marbella we are extremely experienced in this area, with excellent results in achieving a natural pregnancy,” explains Dr Fernandez Montero.
If you suffer from any of these problems please don’t hesitate to contact us, there are many misconceptions surrounding them. At HC Marbella we treat them in a serious, straight forward and confidential manner.
