Cardiovascular diseases are diseases affect the arteries that go to the heart and other organs, mainly the brain, kidneys and legs. The most important diseases are: myocardial infarct and stroke or ictus (brain stroke or hemorrhage). They can be very serious and are the leading cause of death in developed countries.
It is the probability that a person has to suffer one of these diseases within a specific period of time. This will depend primarily on the so-called cardiovascular risk factors that are present in each person.
The most important risk factors are the ones that we call modifiable, as they allow us to act on them in order to improve or correct them. Examples are as follows: hypertension (high blood pressure), hypercholesterolemia (elevated cholesterol), diabetes, obesity, sedentary lifestyle …). It is important to act as soon as possible on all viable risk factors, since, when they coincide in one person, the risk of getting any of these diseases increases exponentially.
With this basic evaluation of cardiovascular risks that we offer to all people older than 35 years, we can detect the presence of cardiovascular risk factors, treat them (with both hygiene and dietary measures as well as specific medication), and thus reduce the chances of developing any of these cardiovascular diseases.
It would consist in a medical consultation with a specialist, who will elaborate a complete clinical history, including the family and personal background, a general physical examination, including the measurement of the blood pressure, weight, height, determination of BMI (body mass index), waist circumference plus a cardiopulmonary and abdominal examination. We will perform an electrocardiogram and blood test with the determination of LDL (“bad” cholesterol) and HDL (“good” cholesterol), triglycerides, blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin and renal function.
Finally, we will provide a clinical report with all the results and the estimation of cardiovascular risk (according to the Framingham equation), including treatment recommendations to achieve the aims recommended in your particular case.
