Biography
Hernán Cortés-Funes (January 18, 1945, Martínez, Buenos Aires) is an Argentine doctor. Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the Complutense University of Madrid in 1967. Specialized in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology, and PhD in Medical Oncology by the UCM in 1970.
After graduating in Medicine and Surgery, he obtained a specialization in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology, the latter not officially recognized in Spain until July 1978, and later, the doctorate in Medical Oncology from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) in 1970. Five years later he participated in the Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in the USA.
Throughout his professional career, he was a foundating member of the Spanish Society of medical Oncology (Spanish SEOM), president of the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), president of the Federation of European Cancer Societies (FECS) and of the Spanish Association of Cancer Research as well as being part of the multiple organizations and cooperative groups, both national and international.
Within the research areas, his interest stands out in the development of new drugs, early clinical studies, clinical pharmacology and new treatments in breast, lung, head and neck cancer and germinal tumors. Dr. Cortés is the author of more than 200 publications in Medical Oncology, collaborator in 14 oncology journals and has written 7 books.

In his career it´s important to highlight also being the president and founder of other Spanish oncology societies such as the International Breast Cancer Research Group (IBGSG), originally called the Ludwig Group and the Cooperative Group for Clinical Research in Breast Cancer and Solid Tumors (Group SOLTI).
He was Head of Oncology service in the “12 de octubre” hospital in Madrid, belongs to the Research Group of the foundation “Fundación 12 de Octubre”, as well as Head of the Oncology Unit by HC Marbella. Except of this he is associate professor of medicine on the Complutense University of Madrid.
Dr. Hernán Cortés-Funes is one of the highest authorities in the country in aspects related to cancer.
