One of the possible cases in women, that may be derived from cancer treatments, is vaginal atrophy.
The progressive decrease in estrogen levels in women during menopause causes many changes, the most outstanding occur in the genital tract due to its sensitivity to estrogen.
Thus, vaginal atrophy is due to the deterioration of mucous membranes caused by the fall in estrogen level.
The most common symptoms are a dry feeling, itching, burning sensation, and problems urinating, which cause dyspareunia, pain during sexual relations.
The thinning of the vaginal wall and the loss of elasticity, as well as the decrease in the vulvovaginal mucous, causes dryness and bleeding caused by small traumas.
This condition affects sexual relations and with this, the quality of life of a woman who is experiencing menopause.
Approximately 50% of women in menopause suffer from these symptoms, of which many may suffer them for more than a third of their lifetime.
There are many, among them, lubricants and vaginal hydrants that, although they decrease irritation caused during sexual activity, they are uncomfortable and do not act in the long-term.
Systemic hormone therapy during menopause is a good solution, but it is not recommended for every woman. Local hormone therapy offers many good results but both act on the most superficial layer of the vagina and are only useful during their use; the symptoms reappear when treatment is stopped.
Special attention should be made to those women who have undergone chemotherapy treatments, importantly, those that have suffered from breast cancer. In these women, systemic hormone therapy is not recommended, and the symptoms of vaginal atrophy are stronger, as the use of anti-estrogen therapies are necessary.
Currently, and due to the magnitude of this problem, a more effective technique that works in the long-term is necessary. Regenerative medicine applied to the vaginal mucosa leads to the Fractional CO2 Laser, as a safe treatment to achieve genital rejuvenation.
Just like its application in other parts of the body, it causes the restructuring of the connective tissue, producing new collagen and elastic fibers.
The fractional CO2 laser has been demonstrated to be a treatment that improves the symptoms of vaginal atrophy (itchiness, dryness, irritation, dyspareunia and dysuria). The best results are achieved by having three session, each approximately 20 minutes, with slight discomfort. Local anesthesia cream is required.
The improvement of the symptoms starts to become noticeable within three months of treatment and experts agree that it is maintained for about 3 years (It may vary depending on the case).
More than 90% of our patients say that they are satisfied or very satisfied with the treatment, with an improvement in their symptoms and higher quality in their sexual relations.
So, the treatment of genitourinary menopause syndrome with fractional CO2 laser is an effective and safe treatment on which we depend on at the gynecological department at HC Marbella International Hospital.
Our gynecologists will exhaustively study each case in order to make a precise and fundamental diagnosis for the correct recommendation of treatment using the Gynecological CO2 Laser.
