According to several scientific studies these and similar fears affect the approximately 30% of men who suffer from premature ejaculation. This type of sexual dysfunction affects both adults and young people, “It impacts greatly on the person who is suffering from it, with them often hiding the problem,” explains Dr. Fernández Montero, Head of the Department of Urology at HC Marbella Hospital.
Quick ejaculation with no control, ejaculation occurs sooner than it should and the lack of control has a big impact on intercourse. In extreme cases, it can occur even before penetration, making it impossible to complete sexual intercourse once initiated. There is no approximate time which is considered “normal” or not, as ejaculation time varies greatly from person to person. What we need to remember is that premature ejaculation causes the person suffering from it significant stress, making it difficult to form intimate, personal relationships.
The answer is emphatically no. Premature ejaculation is not a disease but a form of sexual dysfunction affecting the ejaculatory process, and therefore the individual sexuality of the man affected and his partner.
At present, it is thought that 90% of cases of premature ejaculation are due to psychological or environmental factors, and only 10% have their origin in physiological problems such as: infection of the prostate or urethra, hypersensitivity of the glans, thyroid dysfunction, neurological problems and, more frequently, some antidepressant medications.
Depression, stress, insecurity, anxiety… are some of the psychological factors that can predispose to premature ejaculation, it is believed that these psychological problems lead to a reduction in concentration of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in controlling emotions. Anxiety prior to intercourse is very common among adolescents due to inexperience and fear when faced with sexual intercourse, a situation which can cause premature ejaculation.
Currently there are two types of treatment:
– Psychological treatment such as psychotherapy or behavioural therapy.
– Treatment with medication such as the drug Dapoxetine or the use of anaesthetic creams which are applied to the penis.
Dapoxetine is the only drug that has been studied and approved for the treatment of premature ejaculation. It works at a cerebral level delaying ejaculation. At HC Marbella we will explain all the treatments available in detail, and will decide on the most appropriate treatment option together with you. This is a problem where the opinion of the patient plays an important role.
