Therapeutic exercise helps improve healthy people, with the aim of reducing the risk of suffering back pain, and patients with chronic pain, in order to improve their autonomy, accelerate their recovery and reduce the risk of suffering again painful episodes (in patients who already have a medical diagnosis). In patients with acute back pain (after a medical diagnosis), physiotherapy may help, but with techniques aimed at alleviating pain and inflammation.
In chronic pain with individualized and directed therapeutic exercise. The objective of the exercise is to develop the musculature involved in the functioning of the spine (such as the muscles of the back, the abdominals and the glutes). A powerful, balanced and well-coordinated musculature improves the stability and functioning of the spine, decreases the risk of intervertebral disc injury and improves mobility. Apart from the exercises, physiotherapy offers other techniques:
– Manual: Mobilizations, massage therapy, manipulations …
– Invasive therapy such as dry puncture, percutaneous electrolysis.
– Means or Physical Agents: Electrotherapy, ultrasound, short wave, bandages
The concept of immobilization and absolute rest by back pain have become obsolete. Current studies have shown the effectiveness of individualized training exercises and guidelines for each patient, depending on factors such as their previous muscle condition, the characteristics of their spine or the condition they suffer from.
