Today at the #hcBlog we will discuss with Dr. Víctor Aguilar Urbano about gastric reflux and the possible treatments in our hospital.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when the contents of the stomach rise to the esophagus causing annoying symptoms. Patients often have hiatus hernia, but it can also occur due to an increase in abdominal pressure or weakness of the lower esophageal sphincter.
Patients with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) may have more or less distressing symptoms and may or may not have complications. This variability depends on factors such as the duration of GERD episodes, the volume and aggressiveness (greater or lesser acidity) of the refluxed material, the contact time of this material with the esophagus, the sensitivity of each person to the acid stimulus, etc. The most frequent symptoms are heartburn (sensation of heartburn or retrosternal burning), food regurgitation and chest pain, and among the complications include erosive esophagitis, esophageal stricture, Barrett’s esophagus and laryngitis.
Poor diet, eating fast, not chewing well, being overweight, pregnancy, taking multiple medications, are factors that can increase the risk of developing GERD.
In addition to general measures, changes in eating habits and taking medication, sometimes is not enough to control the GERD or there are complications to be treated.
– HALO technique: is indicated when Barrett’s esophagus appears, especially when there is dysplasia. It is considered a premalignant lesion that can evolve into esophageal cancer.
– MUSE SYSTEM: It is an alternative to surgical fundoplication and it is done using ECHELON FLEX™ ENDOPATH® Staplers, which is designed to carry out a Lower Fundoplication without external incisions, in order to achieve a long-term treatment for GERD.
