The fact of sweating in summer is a normal reaction due to the high temperatures, and even more if we are in a climate of high humidity.
But when sweating becomes excessive without usual stimuli we speak of hyper-hidrosis, and this can lead to damages in the quality of life of the person who suffers. Currently 3% of the population suffers from this problem.
Heat is not the only reason that can encourage excess sweating. Thus, stress is another factor that without depending on the temperature of the environment in which we are can cause in many people an excess of sweating.
Carrying out a localized infiltration of neuromodulator -(neurotoxin derived from the bacterium Chlostridium botulinum)- in areas of the skin where excessive sweating occurs, will result in inhibition of sweat gland response to Acetylcholine, a substance that acts as a neurotransmitter (a messenger of impulses that lead the gland to the production of sweat).
Neuromodulator has been used for the treatment of hyper-hidrosis since 1994 and is approved by the FDA for the treatment of hyper-hidrosis (excessive sweating), specifically in the armpits and in people over 18 years of age. This technique has also been successfully used in other locations such as the palms, soles of the feet, face … and has also been used in minors (including children aged 6 years) with good results since 2005.
The armpits is the most frequent area where the hyper-hidrosis with neuromodulator is treated causing a remarkable decrease from the 2nd day to the 7th of having made the infiltration. This treatment has an average duration of 7 months and is performed even without any anesthetic, although some anesthetic cream may be used if needed.
There is a very low percentage in the development of auto antibodies (“defenses that our own body produces”) against the neuromodulator, but usually this is not related to loss of efficacy of the treatment, and unlike some treatments, Has described the production of compensatory sweating (increased sweating in other untreated areas) following infiltration of neuromodulator. Likewise discomfort beyond those (well tolerated) that occur with the infiltration itself or other complications are exceptional.
