Respiratory alergy

alergia respiratoria

Respiratory allergies are the most common type of allergy.

They usually occur due to contact with allergens that are in the air, principally affecting the airways causing rhinitis, conjunctivitis and/or asthma and other symptoms.

  • Allergic rhinitisthis is an inflammation of the nasal mucosa which usually causes frequent sneezing, nasal congestion and a runny and itchy nose. Allergic rhinitis is usually accompanied by itching of the eyes or ears, soft palate and/or dry cough.
  •

  • Allergic conjunctivitis: this is caused by inflammation of the conjunctiva in the eye, in reaction to contact with airborne allergens, producing itching, redness and watering of the eyes.
  •

  • Nasal polyposis: these are benign growths from the nasal mucosa and/or paranasal sinuses. Although benign, they can sometimes grow and block the nostrils, causing perpetual nasal congestion or changes in smell.
  •

  • Asthma: this is reversible inflammation of the lower airways which leads to narrowing and causes symptoms including breathing difficulties (dyspnoea), tightness in the chest, dry cough or wheezing. Although it can occur at any age, in children it is more frequently associated with an allergic component, a consultation with a specialist is required to control symptoms and prevent them from deteriorating.

alérgenos comunes

Triggers for respiratory allergies are substances found in the air. They can be perennial allergens (causing symptoms throughout the year) or seasonal allergens (producing symptoms, mostly during the spring).

These allergens include: house dust mites, mould (due to humidity), different types of pollen (olive, grasses, cypress, parietaria…), animals etc.

To determine the allergen causing the symptoms, a specialist consultation is required, specialists employ different tests to discover which allergens are involved in the reaction

pruebas alergia

Aeroallergens prick test: exposing the patient’s skin to different allergens to see which one(s) trigger symptoms.

Molecular diagnosis: through the extraction of a small blood sample.

Forced spirometry and other respiratory tests:to measure lung function and establish an asthma diagnosis.

tratamiento alergias

Once the problem has been identified, there are several ways to deal with symptom control, both in the short and long term.

The different treatment options include: antihistamines, nasal corticosteroids, eye drops, different types of inhalers, biologic drugs and immunotherapy (vaccine) against the responsible allergens.
