Venous malformations

malformaciones vasculares

Venous malformations are benign abnormalities of veins which have not developed normally. They are larger and tangled, and if they are close to the skin, a mark may be seen.

Although they may not be detected until weeks or months after birth, this is a congenital condition.

Depending on their size and proximity to certain organs, they can pose a simple aesthetic problem or pose significant health risks to the patient.

  • Family history
  • Depending on their severity and vascular involvement, venous malformations may or may not cause symptoms. Most common are:
    • Risk of bleeding
    • Red, purple or bluish marks on the skin
  • The choice of treatment for venous malformations will depend on their location, size and depth.
  • Laser is often the treatment of choice for small and superficial lesions.
  • Sclerotherapy may be a good option in veins of a smaller calibre, injecting sclerosing material to reduce the vein.
  • Because of its location or nature, surgery may be the most appropriate solution, sometimes combined with sclerotherapy.
  • Drug treatment, when other treatments are not successful, or in combination with sclerotherapy or surgery.
