Pelvic varicose veins are distended veins located within the abdominal cavity, usually surrounding the uterus and ovaries.
This is a chronic condition in women who may present no symptoms or significant impairment of quality of life, pelvic varicose veins may cause a dull and persistent pain in the pelvic area.
The increase in vascularisation in the uterine/ovarian region which occurs in pregnancy can cause this type of varicose vein to develop. This, in turn, causes an increase in pressure leading to the generation of others in the lower body, such as the genital area (vulva) and legs.
20% of women who have given birth to children suffer from them. There is also a significant hereditary component.
