POSE Technique

Stomach reduction via the mouth

The POSE (Primary Obesity Surgery Endoluminal) technique involves reducing the stomach through the insertion of an endoscope in the mouth, resulting in a weight loss of between 45% and 55%.

The aim of this endoscopic technique is to generate a feeling of constant fullness so that the patient feels satisfied after eating a small amount of food.

Advantages

It is less invasive than other bariatric surgeries since it is performed orally and without any incisions.

▪ It does not require incisions.

▪ It is done on an outpatient basis, so there is no need to be hospitalized

▪ Recovery is faster

▪ There is a reduced risk of infection

▪ There is less post-operative discomfort

▪ There are no visible scars

How is it done?

This surgery consists of making a series of folds in the stomach, specifically in the area of the fundus and antrum (the upper and lower parts of the stomach), in order to reduce the size and capacity of the stomach and to make it empty more slowly.

The surgery is carried out under general anaesthesia and takes about 50 minutes. The procedure is normally performed on an outpatient basis, though this depends on the needs of the patient and of the opinion of the specialist.

In some cases patients are hospitalized for 24 hours.

A patient can undergo surgery on a Friday and return to their usual routine on the following Monday.

To achieve optimum results, in addition to reducing the size of the subject the patient must also take part in a programme that re-educates patients about their eating habits and lifestyle.

Who is a candidate?

This incision-less stomach reduction procedure is indicated in patients whose body mass index (BMI) oscillates between 30 and 40. It can also be performed in some patients whose BMI is above 40, provided that certain conditions are present, such as an inability to undergo surgery or rejection after surgery or as an intermediate or “bridge treatment” prior to surgery. The procedure is only recommended for patients who have not managed to lose weight through diet and exercise, as well as for patients who regained weight after their intragastric balloon treatment or who do not wish to undergo major surgery.
