This surgical technique is intended to return to reposition or properly redrape facial structures that have drooped over time.
This intervention is performed on the loose soft tissues of the face and neck, the wrinkles that form between the nose and mouth, the fat deposits in the neck and chin as well as the sagging jaw line. The repositioning of tissue includes both the more superficial tissues such as the skin and fat, as well as the muscles, which gives a natural and long lasting result.
In general, the best candidates for this type of surgery are men or women that are beginning to experience sagging in their face but still maintain an optimal degree of elasticity. The facelift will give the patient a younger appearance. The optimal age for patients undergoing this procedure ranges between 40 and 50, although there are also patients who opt for this surgical technique at age 60 and beyond.
A facelift is performed in as a single procedure. It is important to carry out a thorough pre-operative study that analyses the patient’s face, bone structure and skin, thus establishing the patient expectations and discussing the outcomes that surgery can offer.
Facelifts are performed under general anaesthesia, although the procedure can also be done under local anaesthesia and sedation. The surgery takes approximately 2 hours, although it can last longer if other areas such as the nose, ears, or eyelids will also be operated on. After the intervention, the patient must be hospitalised for at least 1 to 2 days, depending on the type of anaesthesia used and the extent of the lift.
In general, this intervention involves ‘tightening’ the muscle layer and the skin and removing the excess skin.
The post-operative phase is not usually painful, and rest during the first two week is advised.
There are other techniques, such as laser-based techniques and fillers, that give patients the option of improving their appearance and rejuvenating their face without surgery.
