Otoplasty is facial surgery used to correct deformities of the ear, whether it’s the size or its distance from the head (prominent ears). Note that this surgery only addresses aesthetic issues and is not able to address any sort of hearing problem. Given that there are no serious risks or complexity associated with this surgery due to the patient’s age, it can be performed on both adults and children.
Sometimes children suffer trauma in childhood and adolescence as a consequence of ear deformity.
Otoplasties are the most frequent form of facial surgery in children between the ages of 6 and 14. Because the ears continue to develop until approximately age 6, this is the earliest age at which this procedure can be performed.
Many adults are candidates for this surgery for a variety of reasons:
▪ To correct ear deformities, such as the size or shape.
▪ To decrease the gap or separation between the ear and head (prominent or floppy ears).
▪ To repair torn or dilated earlobes.
▪ To correct folds in the earlobe.
Otoplasties typically last between 1 and 2 hours. They are performed on an outpatient basis, meaning that after spending a few hours in the recovery room, the patient can go home.
Otoplasties are performed through an incision behind the ear, leaving no visible scarring.
