Reduction mammoplasty or breast reduction is a surgical technique whose main aim is to change the shape and size of the breast in order to adapt it to the aesthetic requirements of the patient. It consists of reducing the volume of the breast and reshaping it by removing excess fatty tissue, glandular tissue and skin.
▪ Grade 1: This is the mildest and corresponds to small excess volumes.
▪ Grade 2: This corresponds to a more pronounced excess in volume and causes back pain or curvature of the spine.
▪ Grade 3: The breasts reach disproportionate sizes (+ 1,000 gr) and there is even more pronounced pain or curvature of the spine.
▪ Periareolar incision: A single incision is made around the areola and is indicated for patients with slight hypertrophy without ptosis (sagging).
▪ Vertical incision: Two incisions are made, one periareolar (at the edge of the areola) and one vertical, going from the areola to the inframammary crease (at the base of the breast). This type is indicated in patients with moderate hypertrophy and degrees of mild ptosis.
▪ “Inverted T” or “anchor” incision: This technique is the most widely used in breast reductions. Three incisions are made: one periareolar (at the edge of the areola), one vertical to the inframammary crease and another at the inframammary crease, so that the scar is shaped like an inverted “T”.
Once back at home, patients are prescribed 48 hours of complete rest, and after that partial rest—meaning they can move about in a limited way, without sudden movements or carrying weight— for 10 or 15 days. At that point the stitches will be removed and patients can resume normal activity, though they will have to wear a special bra that helps shape the breasts and keeps the scars from stretching.
