Rhinoplasty is surgical technique that improves the shape, size and general appearance of the nose. This is one of the most common surgeries performed on both men and women. It is usually done for aesthetic purposes, although it allows other deformities, such as a deviated septum (via septoplasty), to be corrected at the same time.
There are two types of rhinoplasty:
▪ Closed Rhinoplasty: The most common form of rhinoplasty, an incision is made inside the nostrils, leaving no visible scars on the outside of the nose. The surgeon will shape the bone and cartilage to achieve the desired structure.
▪ Open Rhinoplasty: In more complex cases, such when correcting major deformities, we use this type of rhinoplasty. The surgeon accesses the nose’s structure through a small incision in the columella, the narrow column of skin that separates the nostrils. After the surgery, the small scar is practically imperceptible.
Rhinoplasties last between 1 and 3 hours, depending on the surgical technique chosen. A general anaesthesia is usually used and an overnight stay in hospital is recommended.
After completing surgery, in some cases it will be necessary to use a cast to protect the nose, soothe inflammation, and retain the new shape. This cast should be worn until the surgeon has approved its removal.
Patients can return to their normal routines once the cast is removed.
Nose reshaping or non-surgical rhinoplasty is an alternative for those who do not want to undergo surgery to change the appearance of their nose and prefer a less invasive technique.
