Morbid obesity

Obesity is currently defined as a nutritional disease that corresponds to:

▪ Weight that is 45 kg or higher than the weight recommended by doctors

▪ A body mass index (BMI) of more than 40

The body mass index is based on an individual’s height and weight. When an individual’s BMI is higher than 40, we are facing a case of morbid obesity.

Morbid obesity has three characteristics:

▪ It is a disease and should be treated within a specialised therapeutic framework that can help improve the patient’s health.

▪ It is a disease that may be accompanied by multiple co-morbidities.

▪ It is a disease in which surgery is the only option when medical and dietary treatments have failed.
