Tobacco is the biggest risk factor with regard to lung cancer; it is responsible for more than 80% of lung cancers.
The toxic substances contained in cigarettes produce genetic changes in cells, converting them into cancerous cells. Tobacco is also related to other types of cancer such as cancer of the mouth, throat, oesophagus, bladder and pancreas, among others.
Research shows that there is a close relationship between this disease and tobacco, especially for women, who are at greater risk than men when smoking the same number of cigarettes a day.
If tobacco did not exist, lung cancer would be a rare disease and it would hardly be talked about in the media. It would also be much easier to prevent.
