A stroke is term used to describe any brain damage caused by obstruction to blood flow or a rupture of a cerebral arterial vessel which threatens or actually causes tissue damage, including cerebral infarction.
The word stroke encompasses cerebral infarct, CVA, embolus…
The most common cause of stroke is an accumulation of vascular risk factors.
When a stroke occurs, different symptoms develop depending on the area of brain tissue that has been threatened. Speech disturbances, loss of power, sensory disturbances or even double vision, difficulty swallowing, or altered visual perception may occur. If any of these symptoms occur it is essential to attend hospital urgently, as the first few hours, even the first few minutes, are essential.
Managing to reverse the threat and the lack of blood flow using different treatments and techniques can prevent the patient from having any lasting effects. A stroke is a level 1 medical emergency.
In the face of any sudden acute neurological deficit, stroke is always the initial suspicion. Anyone who has any of these symptoms: loss of strength in any limb, speech disturbances or any facial asymmetry should always go directly to the Emergency Department.
It is particularly important for the patient to be assessed by a neurologist as neurological examination is fundamental for diagnosis. Once a stroke is suspected, the cause must be determined.
There are two main causes:
At HC Marbella, the Neurology Unit works closely with the Endovascular Unit in order to give urgent and appropriate care to patients who have had a stroke and who require these techniques.
We also have a Rehabilitation Unit to help with the patient’s recovery, reducing the physical and sensory effects.
