Eating Disorders (EDs)

TCA

Eating disorders (EDs) are serious illnesses with consequences for the physical and psychological health of sufferers and their families.

EDs involve altered eating habits or weight control behaviours that disrupt the physical, psychological and social functioning of an individual.

The consequences for sufferers can be devastating. In addition, they may experience drastic personality changes, apathy, fatigue, social isolation and extreme preoccupation with food, weight and appearance.

Medical complications include tooth decay, reduced hormone levels and loss of bone density, as well as more serious medical complications such as heart problems and, in extreme circumstances, even death.

Types of eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia, binge eating disorders and atypical eating disorders.

Disordered eating habits

Disordered eating habits can manifest in the form of restricted food intake, rules, strict dieting, preoccupation with food, and altered eating behaviours.

Disordered Weight Control Behaviour (DWCB)

Disordered weight control behaviour may include excessive exercise, self-induced vomiting, and misuse of laxatives, enemas or diuretics.

Anorexia nervosa usually develops during adolescence and if untreated can persist into adulthood. People with anorexia experience the following symptoms:

  • Extreme thinness, causing the individual to weigh less than 85% of the recommended weight for their age and height.
  • Intense fear of gaining weight or putting on weight despite being underweight.
  • Seeing their body as much larger than it really is. This negative evaluation of body shape has a considerable effect on self-evaluation.
  • Women who have started menstruating experience amenorrhoea (at least three months without menstruation).
  • Eating too little and/or exercising too much.
  • Compulsive behaviours/purging (including vomiting after eating or misuse of laxatives).
  • Anorexia nervosa is associated with serious medical complications that can cause death.

Bulimia Nervosa is characterised by the following symptoms:

  • Recurrent episode of binge eating. Binge eating is:
    a) The consumption of an amount of food that is definitely greater than most people would eat under similar circumstances.
    b) Within a limited period of time (e.g. two hours).
  • Feeling of loss of control over food during binge eating.
  • Recurrent inappropriate behaviours aimed at compensating for binge eating episodes. Examples include excessive exercise, self-induced vomiting, fasting, or misuse of laxatives, diuretics or enemas.
  • Binge eating and compensatory behaviours are frequent (e.g. occurring at least twice a week for three months).
  • Body weight and shape are subject to undue self-evaluation.
