Breast ultrasound

The breast ultrasound is a technique that complements mammography. It is an important method of complementary diagnosis of breast pathology.

 

When used together with clinical examination and mammography, ultrasound is essential for the diagnosis and management of malignant and benign processes.

 

At HC Marbella we employ:

 

▪ High-resolution ultrasound.

▪ A high sensitivity colour Doppler.

▪ Diagnostic and interventional ultrasound.

▪ A special probe for the study of the breast.

 

 

Indications

▪ In palpable lumps or lumps detected through mammography: to differentiate CYST or SOLID

▪ Young patients (under 30)

▪ Pregnancy, lactation, inflammation

▪ Breasts with IMPLANTS

▪ Interventional processes: cyst aspiration, FNAB, CNB, and guided biopsy

 

 

Limitations

Ultrasound is unable to detect microcalcifications, which are a very important sign of early breast cancer.

 

Up to 50% of non-palpable cancers manifest themselves as calcifications in mammograms.

 

Ultrasound, therefore, is not an indicated examination technique for breast screening.
