The main objective of the Breast Unit is prevention, to achieve this we have developed an advanced programme for the prevention and early detection of breast cancer, with an integrated team of experts, specialising in different areas and providing a coordinated, step-by-step approach to diagnosis.
This Unit, dedicated to conditions of the breast, provides all the necessary support, commitment and technology for our patients, improving the quality and speed of response.
At HC Marbella we can provide what you need during one appointment, imaging tests and biopsies (if necessary) are performed in the same procedure, to deliver a rapid diagnosis.
Varying according to age:
There are times when women under the age of 40 require a mammogram due to a close family history of breast cancer.
We talk about genetic risks or familial breast cancer when faced with those whose families have multiple cases of cancer, or in those cases where the diagnosis has been made at an unusually young age.
About 15% of breast cancers are associated with a family history, although it is unknown to what extent this genetic susceptibility, certain environmental factors, or a combination of both are involved.
Genetic testing involves a simple blood test and can be used to obtain a more accurate estimation of cancer risk. In some cases, genetic testing can be performed on stored tissue specimens.
Deciding whether to undergo a genetic test is a personal choice which can either be taken at the time of the counselling session or at a future date. Genetic counselling does not require you to have a genetic test, genetic testing may not be useful for all people who receive genetic counselling.
After the relevant tests and results are obtained, genetic counselling includes recommendations for monitoring and a preventative treatment, as appropriate, for both the individual and their family.
At HC Marbella we have specific genetic tests available to search for genes involved in hereditary cancers.
BRCA I and BCRA II: Genetic tests to determine the risk of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, facilitating monitoring and preventative procedures.
If you have a family history of cancer, or if you want to know if you or a member of your family is more likely to develop cancer, you can consult our specialists experienced in the area of hereditary cancer.
An annual gynaecological check-up is required for breast cancer prevention, but breast self-examination is strongly recommended to familiarise yourself with the usual appearance of your breasts to be able to detect abnormalities at any time.
You should consult a specialist in case of any of the following findings at self-examination:
*Self-examination does not exempt women from annual screening, there are some lumps that cannot be detected through self-examination.
