Early detection

prevención cáncer de próstata

In most cases, prostate cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, thanks to early screening tests including a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test. At this stage, the tumour is localized and usually presents no symptoms.

30% of cases will be diagnosed at an advanced stage when the cancer has already produced symptoms such as haematuria or signs of infection, with 10% of cases being diagnosed at the metastatic stage.

When prostate cancer is detected in the early stages, recovery rates are significantly increased.

Early diagnosis screening campaigns vary according to risk groups, the main ways in which they differ are:

  • Men who have an inherited family risk. If there is a first-degree relative, such as father, assessment from the age of 45 is recommended.
  •

  • Men who do not have any family members or direct relatives who have had cancer, but who for their safety should be monitored, should visit a urologist once a year
  •

  • To monitor the course of the disease, PSA concentration – a prostate antigen – is assessed using a blood serum sample. This substance is used as a specific marker or to monitor disease progression after treatment.

consulta con tu urólogo

Most patients are asymptomatic and are diagnosed due to a raised PSA on routine blood testing. Alternatively patients may have urinary symptoms such as difficulty passing urine or blood in the urine (haematuria). In the advanced stages the patient may start with bone pain secondary to metastatic disease.

In the case of any of the below it is advisable to consult a urologist for an accurate diagnosis:

  • From the age of 45 (40 if there is a family history) for a check-up to enable early detection.
  • Haematuria (appearance of blood in the urine).
  • Any symptoms related to urinary obstruction (pain, irritation, or difficulty urinating).
  • Frequent urination.
  • Discomfort in the perineal region.
  • Feeling of incomplete emptying.
  • Incontinence.
